Isi artikelThe question of writing and the insufficiency of the word, coupled with the use of parody constitute the thematic core of Juan Manuel de Prada’s El silencio del patinador. The purpose of this essay is to examine Prada’s intertextual recourse to Spanish and other Western literary traditions in his bid to underscore the illusion experienced by his characters that seek self-worth through writing. As Prada makes intertextual allusions to Miguel Cervantes, Ramón Jiménez, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Francisco Nieva, Francisco Umbral, Felisberto Hernández, and Jorge Luis Borges, he demonstrates simultaneously the postmodernist tendency of rewriting as a technique of composition.
