Isi artikelNowhere did Francisco Nieva—one of Spain’s most innovative playwrights—ever draw the inspiration that propelled the neo-avant-garde tenor of his theater than Paris. When he moved to the French capital in 1952, he developed important contacts with the city’s intellectual community, thanks especially to his marriage to Genevieve Escande, who occupied an important position at the National Center for Scientific Investigation. Among his most significant discoveries was his introduction to Antonin Artaud’s dramatic theory, in which he saw a strong resemblance to his own artistic philosophy. By the time Nieva returned to Spain several years later, the Parisian liberal environment unchained his repressed postist disposition and transformed him from a timid painter into a bold, unabashed dramatist. Echoes of Parisian influences are unmistakable in his dramatic theory and productions, a bona fide testament to the significance of his new-found freedom in the context of Francisco Franco’s censorship regime.
