Kierkegaard’s concept of ‘neighbor love’ is the great source of inspiration for me when I address the very serious and seemingly irresolvable problem of the caste system in India. The phenomenon of caste is a practice which is peculiar to India. As a Christian I would like to respond to this problem using Kierkegaard’s concept of ‘neighbor love’. For Kierkegaard, the concrete and explicit expression of ‘neighbor love’ is to love everyone impartially, equally and indiscriminately. In loving our neighbor there is no preference: we must love everyone we see. This article brings out the general views and functions of the caste system in India. It also tries to show a way for Christians to tackle the problem of caste by reflecting deeply on the essential characteristics of Kierkegaard’s concept of ‘neighbour love’. I attempt to point out that Christians in India should apply seriously the concept of neighbour love in a concrete way if they wish to eradicate the caste system in India today.
