Isi artikel
The impact of addictions on family members is well documented. However, in addictions, the experience of compassion fatigue is not. Compassion fatigue is uniquely sophisticated when therapists work with individual family members who love the person with the addiction, and is far more difficult to recognize, understand, and treat in this population. The threat of harm from lack of recognition or in appropriate treatment is dangerously high for individuals for individuals who suffer from this. This threat has no geographic or economic boundaries. Yet, there is a philosophical and therapeutic stance that can be a powerful force in helping therapists to help family members to heal from compassion fatigue: Viktor Frankl’s philosophy of meaning. This global, meaning based intervention is proffered to give therapists a theoretical and practical guide to help therapists to help those unique spirits who are worn down by the suffering of bearing witness to the struggles of people with addictions, loving them, and loving themselves.
