This study discusses the linkage between cultural literacy of health care providers and the quality of decisions, services, and care that are provided to patients with lower acculturation levels in the US. Researchers hypothesize that while there is some understanding of postpartum depression in the general female population, it is not yet known how postpartum depression is manifested among women of different racial and cultural backgrounds and therefore the risk of mismanagement might be evident by service providers without adequate cultural awareness to this segment. Health care providers to this community (n = 20) participated in this research and results indicated misconceptions and inconsistencies in their management of symptomatic Caribbean women as a result of difference in cultural understanding and interpretation of their health condition.
