Isi artikel
This study investigates whether there is a link between an individual’s decision to pursue a career in science and engineering and the increase in offshoring activities in the United States. Using a labour market supply approach and state level data, I find empirical evidence that the supply of scientists and engineers in the United States decreased as a result of an increase in offshoring activities over the period 1994-2008. Results based on estimations excluding Social Sciences from the analysis reveal an even stronger negative relationship between the two. One potential explanation is that all occupations stemming from educational fields in Natural Science and Engineering are considered ICT intensive, and therefore offshorable.
