The clinical presentation of acute bacterial parotitis (ABP) in elderly subjects can often be quite spectacular, with sudden hot and red swelling of the parotid gland associated with localized pain, trismus, fever, and sometimes shivers (Figure 1). ABP has rarely been described in the literature, although it is established that the prognosis is poor.
