Aging is a multifactorial process resulting in several organ. Skin as an outer organ of our body undergoes chronological aging, because skin is in direct contact with the environment. The primary environmental factor that cause chronological aging to the skin is ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Photoaging, sun-induced skin aging, is acumulative process, depends on the degree of sun exposure and skin pigment. Recent advances in skin biology have increased our understanding on skin homeostasis and the aging process, as well as the mechanisms by which ultraviolet radiation contributes to photoaging and cutaneous disease. Substantial progress in understanding cellular and molecular mechanism of chronological aging and photoaging provide exciting new oppurtunities for the development of antiaging therapy. Carotenoid are functional meterial isolated from nature, they have been aplied for food. Astaxanthin is one of the carotenoid that had protection effect on photoaging which are inhibitory effect on wrinkle formation, decrease of skin elasticity, as a Radical Oxygen Species scavenger, both aplied for food or topically on the cosmetic preparation.
