This study explored the self-perceived English proficiency of university students in hotel-related fields in order to examine if technology and vocational university students feel that they are able to meet the high demand for English when starting their careers in the hospitality industry. In comparing the self-perceived English proficiency of hospitality students with that of hotel empl oyees in Taiwan, we found that discrepancies exist between the perceptions of English proficiency between students and industry personnel, which suggests a need for the revision of ESP courses to better prepare students to access their target workplace, the innovations of teaching materials and assessments, and the collaboration between industry and education institutes
