In order to assess the competence of a learner of a second language, it is necessary to devise special tests. These tests should allow us to understand which rules of the second language have been internalized. Rules for nested dependencies were used in one such set of tests. The tests revealed that the students in question could not handle such nested dependencies in the sec- ond language. The students therefore exhibited a certain lack of competence in the second language. Such tests provide a useful diagnostic tool.
