At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Romantic movement embraced all aspects of Spanish culture and brought a whole new attitude toward life: a spirit of individualism, a longing for freedom, a spirit of idealism, a clash with reality, and metaphysical anguish. As a result of these of features, the techniques, topic, and styles of literaure differed from those of other periods. In this article we first define and outline the stages of Romanticism, including its relationship to the sociocultural of the time, its essential principles, and its popular appeal. Secondly, we explain the development of Spanish Romanticism, its value, and general significance, exemplifying these through the works of Romantic authors in the fields of poetry, theater, nonfiction and fiction. Third, we specifically examine, from a linguistic perspective, the works of Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, a later Romantic writer who spans the Romantic and Realistic periods. Here we introduce and analyze in detail his poetic, ideas, rhyme, style, and poetic value. Finally, we conclude by showing how this investigation helpsprovide a precise explication of Spanish Romantic literature.
