Isi artikel
Since the sixxth century has distinguished seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy Wrath, Sloth, Lust, Greed and Gluttony, However, before the sixth century, the Fathers of the Church had the eight sin-acedia-which is especially dangerous for those desiring spiritual perfection. This sin is a sort of apathy and inactivity in the practice of virtue. It does not matter what kind of virtue it is, whether religious vocation, purity of heart or professional success. This article will analyze the eight sin in Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve's novel Volupte (1834). Although now eliminated from colloquial language, acedia could be very helpful in understanding spiritual ambivalence in Christianity. The main character of Volupte, Amaury, who is very intelligent and ambitious when it comes to his spiritual perfection, addresses his letters to a young friend whom he wants to save from traps and temptations of the world. In the past Amaury's life was full of temptations and depravity. Volupte is inspired by the life of Sainte-Beuve himself, a romantic writer known for his complex, sensitive nature and two contrary tendencies: one approaching God and the other approaching Satan. Volupte reflects this ambivalence by using simultaneously difficult and fascinating language. The first part of the article will show the complexity of acedia in the context of Christian spirituality and trace its history through the centuries. The second part will analyze the presence of the eight sin in Sainte-Beuve's Volupte, demonstrating how this book is situated somewhere between God and Satan (a necessary condition for talking about acedia) Next will focus on the main character behavior, such inconsistency in pursuing a goal, procrastinationand self-love. Finally, in the last part of this article we will consider the sense of this books's title.
