Isi artikelThe novel A Confession, written in the only work of the German writer Theodor Storm where the phenomenon of cancer drives the narrative, and where the problem of euthanasia is discussed. In view of the rise and spread of many new diseases in our age of hagih economic and technical advancement, the problem of euthanasia or mercy killing has been increasingly raised in discussions of the quality of life and associated moral questions. A Confession therefore remains a highly relevant work of fiction. Focusing on the topic of euthanasia, this essay analyzes A Confession in order to show how Storm, through the doctor's eyes, reflects on themes such as guilt, expiation, morality, and humanity. It also seeks to discover how the uses the issue of euthanasia as a basis discussing the meaning of life, and death in his time. Published years before Adolf Jost's 1985 work supporting the right to die, Storm's A Confession is a pioneering text in the public discussion of euthanasia.
