This paper aims to discuss a genre-based approach adopted in the newlydesigned high school English curriculum. For this purpose, four main themes that will be explored here include: 1) some common practices of teaching English in high schools, 2) the principles of a genre-based approach, 3) various emerging difficulties in applying this new teaching approach, and 4) a number of recommendations for future practices. The discussion on the first issue will be based on a number of research findings, observations, and informal discussions with some teachers. Secondly, as a genre-based approach is adopted in the new curriculum, reviewing its underlying principles and its teaching frameworks will provide a potrait of how teaching and learning process should be realised. Next, a number of difficulties that emerge from the implementation of the new curriculum, the teaching approach in particular, will will be based on some informal discussions with teachers and observations. This will bring us to the last theme of this paper in which some recommendations that may help teachers in applying the new teaching approach will be provided.
