Isi artikelThis article argues that identities matter in literacy practices. The argument in this essay delineates the roles of schoolings in constituting the school community’s positioning, relation, and orientation. To strongly support the argument, I closely examine the students’ writings in bilingual context and in general school using Hallidayan perspectives on discourse analysis. The analysis reveals that the students’ identities as indicated by the linguistic and discorusal features of their writings are instrumental to strongly support the taken-up theories of ideologies, schoolings, literacy and identities. Such examples of analysis show that the students have particular positionings in dealing with particular topics, fields, and experience. The students’ writings present they way they construct certain properties for particular fields, topics, label for the roles mentioned, identify the roles of participant, and indicate constructed orientations. Since both bilingual and general schools matter in the construction of identities, both types of schools are recommended that they should apply the approaches of critical pedagogy to critically deal with the representations presented in texts ubiquitous in any media.
