Isi artikelIndonesia, as a multilingual society, has interesting phenomena in language choice. In relation to that, Yogyakarta is also one of the best examples of multilingual society which has many students from various islands and cultures in Indonesia. The fact, automatically, brings the members of the society to choose what language, when, and to whom they speak. This attracts the writer to understand more about the phenomena of language choice among the various students in their daily lives, especially the students of Ahmad Dahlan University as one of multilingual societies in Yogyakarta. In short, this research is aimed to understand and describe the language choice of English Department students of Ahmad Dahlan University as a multilingual society. This research is included into qualitative one. In collecting the data, the writer conducts a directed interview with 79 English Departments students of Ahmad Dahlan University in the sixth semester of 2004/2005 academic year, especially in Sociolinguistics class. Then, the collected data are selected to be classified based on the origins of the students. After that, the data are classified again based on the domains, interlocutors/addressee, and topics to determine the language choice. At last, those are described with other social factors proposed by Holmes like social distance, status scale, degree of formality and goals of the interaction. The result shows that the English Department students come from at least 16 provinces in Indonesia Then, the domains of language use among the sixth semester English Department students are family, neighborhood, friendship, religion, education and employment. the native language and informal style is frequently chosen in the domain of family and neighborhood, whereas Indnoesian/national/official language and formal style is frequently used in the domain of education, religion and employment. The more formal style they choose, usually the more formal topic they talk about. Then, the specific social factors proposed by Holmes like social distance, (stranger vs friend), relative status or role (teacher-pupil), degree of formality and the function or goal of interaction, in fact, influence their language choice.
