Isi artikelBased on Competence Based Curriculum Speaking is one of the four basic competences that the students should gain well. It has an important role in communication. Speaking can find in spoken cycle especially in Joint Construction of Text or Independent Construction of Text stages. In carrying out speaking, SMP students face some difficulties. One of them about language itself. In fact, most of the students get difficulties to speak even though they have a lot of vocabulary and have written it well. The problems may be that they are afraid of making mistakes; they are shy to speak up or teachers’ technique of teaching. Most of English teachers do not master the materials. Another important problem is that the teacher seldom uses media in their teaching and learning process. This classroom action research was carried out to see the developing students’ speaking through Puppets show at the end of JCT stage and to introduce a model in speaking learning process to especially Indonesian English teachers, and giving contribution to English teachers concerning the use of Puppets in presenting the students product in JCT stage at SMP, to give a variety in teaching and learning process, and the most important one is to motivate especially shy students to speak by using Puppets. Speaking by using puppets is that the students use glove puppets on their hand. In-group they try to construct a text, for instance in narrative text they construct ‘Malin Kundang’. After constructing and correcting the choices of words, they come into presentation of the story by all members of their group should take a character. They do speaking behind a screen that as high as the tall students. The audiences only can see the puppets on their hand based on the characters they act. They are free to move and make their puppets go here and there. This way can help especially the shy students to speak; they do not see directly the audiences because of the screen. This kind of teaching and learning process by using puppets has applied at SMP Negeri 17 Pekanbaru Riau, especially the third level students 2004 – 2005. The data were collected through observation by using speaking format in two cycles. Gaining the optimal result after giving ‘good model’ how to play the puppets while speaking by the teacher. Each group may create a text in much kind of narrative stories that they like best. The result of the two cycles we can say that in the second cycle more increase than the first cycle. The case shows speaking by using puppets and by giving ‘good model’ can improve and can motivate most of the students to be brave to speak or pronouncing the words or sentences more or less 20,20% or 12,55 point better then the first cycle. In general the result of this Classroom Action Research shows that speaking by using puppets are able to develop the students’ ability in speaking. By using this technique the students are interesting and feel relax because they can pronounce the sentences without facing the audiences, they only face the screen and these can increase their competence in speaking. A lot of students are unsuccessful to speak because they are standing in front of their friends. And anyhow, in applying the action research the writer face gaps and weaknesses. For the fist time the students find difficulties in preparing puppets that they need, they must buy or make it, and also they are rarely use puppets in presenting their product in preview level. Beside that, everybody in each group should get a chance to say a sentence or more. These gaps can solve by giving them chance to use school puppets, giving them good model and many chance to present or say sentences behind the screen, and giving rewards to the students who can apply puppets well, related to story they act and pronounce sentences clearly and understandable.
