Isi artikelInformation and technologies play an important role in the society. ICT has changed the way people communicate in a global era. For education to maximize the advantages of using ICTs in learning, it is important for the teacher to have basic skills and competencies in ICT. Introducing Information Technology is one of the teachers’ duties in 2004 curriculum. However, at schools, computer is known as a tool for administrative duties, or only IT teachers who use computer in teaching. Szabo in 2001 conducted a meta analysis study on the impact of Interactive multi media. The results showed a positive achievement on all academic levels. CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning),another term of using computer in teaching and learning process, implemented in Language Laboratory in the USA in 1960s and 1970s. The software program focus on vocabulary and discrete grammar points. English teachers are encouraged to use computer in implementing the curriculum, by having interactive quiz, movie, film strips, getting an access to the internet etc. Several advantages of using computer in EFL Instruction: - Encourage learners to generate original utterances - Provide more contexts in which language skills are used - Allow learners a certain amount of control - Gaining Attention - Presenting Objectives - Interactive Hyperlinks - Text to Text - Graphic to Graphic - Text to Graphic - Graphic to Text - Interactive Quiz - Elaborative Feedbacks - Dynamic visuals - Navigational Tools This paper will elaborate more on using computer by developing ICT in teaching English as a Foreign Language by offering stimulus for discussions, writing or developing critical thinking using simulations and stories, providing a non-drill format and practicing for language skills.
