Isi artikelIndonesian government expects that the Indonesians can read textbooks and transfer modern science and technology to raise their living standard, image and they also have true democracy based on their multicultural situation and achieve their emancipation. Lots of modern technology textbooks are written in English; as a result this language is compulsory in high schools and higher educations. The result of some observations and informal interviews shows that the high school students tends to forget the content of the text given in reading programs. They assume that reading class is to develop their vocabulary; and very often they forget these words shortly after the tests. English reading program in Civil Engineering Department applies several approaches to overcome these problems. First, by applying response-based approach for reading literature suggested by Langer (1994. This approach stresses on the exploration of horizons of possibilities by means of questionings. It encourages the learners to interact with literary texts based on their background knowledge and to acquire the new one. Second, Dewey’s found that learners will talk about things they do and are interested in. Based on the need analysis, the students prefer to read authentic materials dealing with their field of study. Rosenblatt (1991) argues that any texts can have both literary and information aspects and they can be read either efferently or aesthetically. In addition, Hirvela (1990) suggests that ESP teachers can make use of literary texts to develop the students’ language knowledge and skills. Hadaway, (2002) also proposes literature-based instruction; it is an instructional approach for language teaching using authentic materials. 2 Third, some teaching techniques are used to apply these three approaches. Two of them are “KWL” which is applied together with reading technique to identify several patterns of formal texts suggested by Johns and Davies (1983). Having learnt English using these approaches and techniques many times with the non-English department students, they can develop their creativity and transfer technology.
