This study compares the editorial issued before the reform era, and one published after it. Reform movement has such a deep and wide impact in all aspect of Indonesia. One of them is the freedom atmosphere for the press that had long endured a confining policy ruled out by the new-order authority. This comparative study is conducted to see the position of the government, the media and the public. Two editorial texts, discussing the same theme of general election, are taken as the data source, and then, are analyzed by employing systemic functional grammar. The result of the analysis shows that in the pre-reform era, the media place themselves lower than the ruler, but set to be higher than the public. Meanwhile, in the post-reform era, the media put themselves in the same position with the public, and lower the stand of the ruler.
