Isi artikelBahasa Indonesia and English share these four main lexical categories: verb, noun, adjective, and adverb. Unlike English, however, Bahasa Indonesia carries only limited morphological markers as to what constitutes a verb, a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. It is true that in Bahasa Indonesia, a verb is normally marked with {me-} as in words like memanah. However, there are many verbs of Bahasa Indonesia that do not carry this kind of marker as in words like makan, tidur, tergantung (depend), and many others. As for English, the suffix {-ing} or {-ed} of English, for instance, indicates that the root is a verb; the suffix {-ly} generally indicates that the root is an adjective. This interlingual difference may pose challenges for Indonesian students of English. This phenomenon should account for the problems of acquisition for such verbs as depend, agree, remain, belong, close, and open, for these verbs do not carry the expected marker(s) when translated into Bahasa Indonesia. To make things worse, these English verbs do not carry [+ACTION] or [+DO] saliency among Indonesian learners of English. This paper will then look at the influence of Bahasa Indonesia (L1) semantic constraints on the problem of acquisition of English (L2) syntax.
