Isi artikelFrom 1924 to 1951, the New York-based International Auxiliary Language Association conducted an extensive research program in interlinguistics with the financial support of Alice Vanderbilt Morris. The original goal was to gather evidence for the selection of one international language from among the existing candidates, including Esperanto, Ido, and Latino sine flexione. However, under influence from prominent American and European linguists, particularly Edward Sapir and Otto Jespersen, research came to focus first on the common features of Western languages and then on the creation of a new hybrid language, Interlingua. The article reviews some of the ideological influences that promoted this shift, and their relationship to other marginal traditions in modern American linguistics.
