Isi artikel
A case of corpus cultivation language planning is reported here: the 1990 Luso-Brazilian Orthographic Accord for the Portuguese-speaking countries, signed by representatives of all seven countries that have Portuguese as their official language. Sociohistorical background is provided about portuguese standardization and spread, the distribution of the language in the world today, and the development of its spelling norms. Discussion of the Accord and the ensuing debate is carried out through an analysis of the positions taken and of the arguments used by authors in a selection of scholarly and journalistic articles. These arguments are contrasted with those presented by Geerts, van den Broeck and Verdoodt (1977) in their report on a similar case. The author concludes that while most of the debate revolves around issues of linguistic efficiency, the Accord and its proponents are primarily concerned with political and diplomatic efficiency.
