The history of catechese development from time to time has already indicated innovation in the field of catechese, Catechese which formerly focused on doctrine, has gradually shown interest in the situation of the community within the context of their life. Thus, catechese always deals with the people whether individually or in groups to interpret or understand life in all of its dimension and hopefully to live evermore truly according to the pattern of Christ Himself as the living foundation of the Church. Katekese umat which is developing in Indonesia is a community oriented catechese. Therefore, it emphasized the participation in its process of the faithful within the community which gives witness to the faith in Jesus Christ the basis of the church. Using the principle of Katekese Umat with the basic categorial communities, Katekese Umat provides the church effective means in guiding and developing the community of faith in large urban diocese like Jakarta.
