This ethnographic study reports how the children propose an asking for something . Data for this study come from a three-week study of 4 children (12-19 years old) when they interact in the family orally. All the children speak Indonesian fluently and Batak Language a little. Using note field, this study shows that the children use illocutionary act in proposing an asking for something both directly and indirectly. Direct speech act can be classified into two categories; 1) Direct speech act by stating the objects, and 2) Direct speech act by giving the reason. Furthermore, direct speech act by stating the objects can be classified into 4 categories, namely; a. As a routine activity b. The speaker thinks that what he asks for is his right. c. The social status to his interlocutors. d. Moral support from the people around the speaker while indirect speech act can be classified into two categories, namely : 1) indirect speech act using a question and 2) Indirect speech act showing the fact. The evidence suggests that Indonesian language teachers apply communicative approach at schools. The facts show that the main function of the language is not enough only to master the grammatical rules.
