Isi artikelInternal modifications are identified as additional elements that function as indicating devices or sociopragmatic roles (Blum-Kulka,1989:9). This modifications are existed in the requesting which is as an illocutionary act of want conveyed by a speaker to be performed by the hearer for the speaker’s benefit (Trosborg 1994: 187). This descriptive study focuses on the realisation of internal modifications in requesting done by the male and female university students in Tasikmalaya who have the Sundanese background and studying in English Department. DCT (Discourse Completion Test), consisting of ten situations based on the teaching activities in the classroom responded by requesting acts, is used to collect the data. The data are analysed by using Blum-Kulka’s theory of internal modifications (1989). The result shows that the males and females modified internally their requesting by using various downgraders, including syntactic downgraders and lexical downgraders, and upgraders which is specificly used by intensifier, time intensifier, and repetition of request. The choice of the modifications is realised the way they represent their dominance, social distance, imposition, and their identity, that men are represented as emotional (Galasinski 2004:144), and women are superpolite (Lakoff, 2004:80).
