Isi artikelThis chapter explores the introduction of the Internet into schools for instructional purposes, examining the Internet’s potential to improve education and the fac- tors that appear to impede full realization of this potential. This chapter focuses on Internet use, rather than on the use of computer technology more generally, because different kinds of computer use have somewhat different kinds of potential to change education (Levin & Bruce, 2003; Means, 1994; Salomon, 1993) and they do not face exactly the same set of impediments to the realization of their potential. For example, cognitive tutors are designed speci?cally to help students learn particular cognitive skills. Their success is measured in terms of whether students learn speci?c subject matter better and/or faster than otherwise, and they function on self-contained personal computers (Anderson et al., 1995; Koedinger & Corbett, this volume). In contrast, Internet use is often intended to help students gather information or to communicate with others. Success in such cases is a function of whether the appropriate amount and kind of information can be located or whether the communication enhances the attainment of the educational goals it was intended to further. In addition, the fact that the Internet provides access to information and individuals outside of the school raises a set of important issues not raised by the use of stand-alone software like cognitive tutors.
