Isi artikelThis study was to find out the usefulness of the translation skills and what benefits the students obtain after learning them for three meetings. The population of the study was 60 students, and each was given a short text consisting of approximately 220 words with a topic on environment consisting of a number of complex, compound, and simple sentences to be translated without using any translating tools. The results of their translation were compared to see whether their translation was acceptable in terms of choice of words, appropriacy and accuracy. Furthermore, they were asked to respond to a set of questionnaire containing questions related to the translation process. The results showed most students were able to translate simple, compound, and complex sentences quite successfully. However, some still had some difficulties when translating some difficult words. It can be concluded that students need more practice and challenging texts to make them understand English texts better. The results can also be used by teachers to improve their teaching methods and teaching materials.
