This paper examines several translation strategies as an attempt to meet correspondence of the translation of the novel Saman. Recently, there has been wide interest to investige how translators work on literary translation and anticipate the cultural distance between the source text and the target text. The novel Saman written by Ayu Utami, is one of strongest novel in Indonesian literary history. According to Nida (2004), there is no absolute correspondence between two languages, moreover, she remind the translators to pay attention to the figurative expressions and metaphors in a literary translation. The data collection and analysis were done by reading the the novel closely in which the target text and the source text were compared in term of correspondence. Researcher also studied the note written by the translator, Pamela Allen which was an important resource to understand the choice of words made by the translator. The finding shows that the translator applied the cultural substitution and the domestication to reduce the foreignness of the meaning and to produce acceptable translation for readers.
