Isi artikelStudies on translation have proven that food terms have their own way to be translated to the target language (Rogers, 2008; Li, 1976; Chafe, 1976). It can be according to the ingredients of the food, the linguistic terms or the cultural characteristic of the food that is originally made in specific region. It is believed that translated food terms have their own =special meaning‘ if the translators can discover the way to find it. The special meaning itself becomes the =faithful translation‘ (Kolawole & Salawu, 2008, p. 6). The present paper aims to investigate the translator‘s faithfulness in the translated food terms. The translation was examined through the faithfulness of translation (Fisher, 1987; Kolawole & Salawu, 2008). It was categorized based on the fact, relevance, consistency, and consequence of the translation. Two different translated food terms were chosen as the data of the study in which they were taken from a Chinese restaurant that specializes in seafood. The data were analyzed based on those categories via literal meaning, the content of the food, the structural comparison and cultural meaning from Chinese people. Therefore, interviews of Chinese people were conducted to clarify the real meaning of the data. Various results are revealed from the four categories. It can be concluded that in translating the terms of the food, the translators should also consider the ?other meaning? behind their translation such as the ingredients, the linguistic terms, and the cultural sense of the original region that the food was made from. It is suggested for other researcher to also discover another category of the faithfulness translation, the transcendent issues, which was not investigated in the study in order to find the complete detail of the translated food terms.
