‘A day of dappled seaborne clouds’ is the poetic phrase that the young Stephen Dedalus whispers to himself while standing beside the Irish Sea, contemplating a life in the priesthood. Thus putting words to his world, Dedalus, the protagonist of James Joyce’s semi-autobiographical masterwork A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916/1988), experiences a moment of epiphany and resolution. With this quiet utterance, the direction of his adult life is determined: it is to be the life of an artist (or ‘arti?cer’ in Joyce’s phrase), not that of a Catholic priest. Young Stephen at once hears, sees, feels and thus comprehends, the contents of his own mind and heart in this singular expressive instant. ‘The phrase, and the day, and the scene,’ Joyce writes, ‘harmonized in a chord’ (p. 166). And the musical metaphor is an apt one. This is because Stephen’s epiphany, we invite our readers to consider, may not be understood as divine inspiration or a bolt from the blue, but rather as an artistic composition. From a ready collection of impressions, feelings, mem- ories, sights, sounds and smells, Stephen, on some level of consciousness, selects, molds and composes elements of experience so as to produce a newly redesigned understanding of who Stephen Dedalus is and should be. And, just as a musical concerto is textual evidence of the composer’s creative process, the phrase that Steven utters – a day of dappled seaborne clouds – is durable proof of his epiphany, reminding the ‘artist’ of his creative act and, if shared, perhaps precipitating further moments of inspiration in others, as Joyce’s text has in fact done for so many.
