Tracing learning, learning across the di?erent settings in which learners participate, has become an important research topic during the last couple of decades. Young people are involved in a whole range of di?erent activities across sites and over time; they play computer games with friends, discuss topics, coordinate parties or map networks on Facebook and carry out science projects at school, where they need to collect and validate information on the internet. All of these activities involve various forms of participation. Through participation in these activities, which takes places in di?erent settings, individuals are recognised and constituted as a variety of types of persons: as the computer geek, as the best football player or as the science genius. Furthermore, many things happening in informal settings might have implications for learning school subjects, and many things happening at school are not necessarily about education, as the editors argue in the introduction to this volume. Here, we introduce a set of analytical concepts for grasping the tensions, connections and transformations that occur in participation in and across sites. Informed by a dialogic perspective on human action and meaning making, we focus on the person as a participant in various practices as our unit of analysis. Widening the analytical scope enables us to understand some of the relationships between the di?erent activities in which young people are engaged.
