Isi artikelThailand readiness for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) calls for ELT pedagogical shifts from traditional learning methods to more innovative pedagogical practices which require greater students’ ownership and involvements in their own learning processes. The ASEAN era will force Thais to interact not only with other Thais but also with other regional and international ASEAN citizens. This will require EFL learners in the ASEAN era to specifically develop their communication competency with appropriate negotiation and persuasive strategies while perfecting their Asian knowledge and cultural understanding with international mindsets. Focusing particularly on the linguistic negotiation skills required to fulfill the ASEAN blueprints, ELT academics will need to shift their didactic practices to include greater democratic pedagogical principles. This paper surveys some pedagogical considerations and strategies EFL practitioners can implement to effectively response to the students’ needs in their linguistic and professional preparations for the upcoming ASEAN era.
