There is a tremendous need for Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT) scores in Asia, particularly Japan, for various reasons - nearly every university in the USA and Canada requires a TOEFL iBT score, either as an entrance requirement, or for exchange programs. In addition, Japanese companies are increasingly asking for TOEFL iBT scores, both for job placement and job advancement. However, TOEFL scores in Asia are comparatively quite low, especially eastern Asian countries, such as Japan and Thailand. There are a number of factors leading to this difficult situation, including the lack of TOEFL iBT preparation courses, and few easily accessible testing centers. This paper will show the need for TOEFL iBT testing centers and preparation courses, followed by an examination of one particular TOEFL iBT preparation course, and the difficulty in ascertaining how to structure the course. The initial course was restructured, shifting to focus more on requisite skills rather than the test structure or the outline of available textbooks. Surveys administered after two courses showed course participants were more confident in their TOEFL iBT ability. This paper provides a model for smaller, more rural universities to follow in their efforts to provide access and training for the TOEFL iBT.
