Development a modernization in Indonesia, which has been oriented towards economic growth has reinforced the existing inequality beween the rich and the poor. The assumption of economic growth leading to a trickle down effect of the wealth from the rich to the poor has turned out to be wring. The reality is that capital is owned by a small group of rich people while a process of impoverishment affects the larger population. A small but the very powerfull group of people that create privileges to safeguard their wealth and power controls the social system. The larger part of the population will stay poor because they have no choice or alternative than to accept their fate. The wealth of the small group of the rich depends on the impoverishment of the larger group. The rich exist because the poor support them form the bottom. The poor living in big cities are one of the manifestations of the process of impoverishment and marginalization caused by an unfair and unequal system.
