Isi artikel
Zoos operate within a time of decreasing biodiversity. The rapid exploitation of natural resources, climate change, pollution, flora and fauna extinction and overall environmental degradation have all continued. Therefore, zoos play a very important role in ensuring the survival of wildlife species all over the world from extinction. Some zoos in modern countries have been established specifically to protect animal species through specific guidelines, awareness activities and education strategies. Specific methodologies are implemented to ensure the species’ welfare and to support the species’ survival in the wild. Meanwhile zoos in developing countries such as Indonesia put wildlife in prison to maintain their business and even take individuals from the wild to put in their zoos. In this project, the Malayan tapir was used as a study case, and the zoos’ management behavior and public perceptions of the tapir were studied.
