Genetic is on the forefront of all the scientific endeavours of our time. The most spectacular undertaking is The Human Genome Porject that is expected to be finished in 2003. Many scientists do not hesitate to predict that the knowledge about the complete human genome will open a totally new future for the medical sciences. In the non human field, the new genetics is already applied for some years in biotechnology (agriculture, cattle breeding). But next to very promising prospects, the new genetics also raises many ethical questions. The article explores these problems successively at the non human and human level. It also focuses on the arguments that are put forward by the several positions.
