Isi artikelThe author of this article describes an exercise of parallel text analysis and/or production in German as a foreign language (FL), which demonstrates to the students that contextual fac- tors in¯uence the selection of speci®c variants. These variants must be chosen out of so-called macroprogrammes. A macroprogramme lists the linguistic and extralingustic means a lan- guage o?ers to express one de®ned function. Furthermore, students must be made conscious of the fact that di?erent languages frequently use di?erent macroprogrammes in order to express the same meaning. The intralingual and interlingual analysis of the di?erent macro- programmes will help advanced students who already have a command of the main vocabu- lary and grammatical forms and structures of the FL to acquire greater communicative competence.
