Given its prominence as one of the largest and certainly the most elaborately decorated Buddhist stupas in the world, it is regrettable that a foundation inscription giving a firm date, name, or patron for the Barabudur monument has never been found. In the absence of a foundation inscription, a number of scholars have proposed and examined a variety of dating indicators. This article assesses past efforts to attempt a dating of the Barabu?ur monument, and offers a new hypothesis on the dating and founder.
