Isi artikel
This study aimed at evaluating the equivalents of nominal constructions of a translated version of Barker’s textbook entitled Cultural Studies. The evaluation was made by comparing the semantic components, propositions, and coherence of the original and the translation and by evaluating the effectiveness of explication strategies employed by the translators and analyzing the errors they made. The study used rating scales and error analysis to evaluate the equivalents of the nominal constructions. Three experts participated in the evaluation. The results show that the mean scores for semantic equivalents, pragmatic equivalents, effectiveness of the use of explicit and implicit strategies are 3.37, 3.26, and 3.53 respectively, that the translators made 12% global errors and that they still faced comprehension problems that were caused by polysemy in nouns, nominalizations, and adjectives. The errors are related to inability to translate whole constructions, premodifiers, and postmodifiers.
