Isi artikel
This study investigates how domestication and foreignization as two ‘opposing’ strategies take place in English-Indonesian technical translation. Domestication is the approach of some translators who prefer changing the source language (SL) values whereas foreignization is applied by others who choose to keep the values of the SL. To find out whether these two terms are worth disputing, the translation of 482 biosecurity-related terms was analyzed in terms of procedures of translation and the characteristics of domestication and foreignization. Having done the analysis, it was found that the meeting point of domestication and foreignization in English-Indonesian technical translation lied on the element of adaptation. Despite the different flavor they share, either adaptation of concept or adaptation of spelling can increase the number of terms in the inventory of Indonesian technical terms. This is a proof that in the translation of English-Indonesian technical terms, domestication and foreignization are not worth disputing.
