Isi artikelThe author reminds us from the first page of the book that ‘There is no learning without remembering. And language learning—perhaps more than most forms of learning—places huge demands on memory’ (p. 1). This prompts the question of why memory does not figure more prominently in current language learning theory and practice alike. In fact, in our field, there is a rather scanty literature on the subject. Apart from classic earlier work by Stevick (1996), the importance given to noticing by Schmidt (1990), the experimentation with the Keyword Method by Meara (Meara 2009) and others, and Skehan’s claim that memory is a key component of language aptitude (Skehan 1998), there is precious little. And very little is available in the way of practical activities either, with some notable exceptions (Lindstromberg and Boers 2008). If you want to know about memory, even in relation to languages, you have to go to cognitive psychology (Baddeley 2004), neuroscience, books on self-improvement, or popular science (Buzan 1993; Maley 2011).
