This article shows the relevance of the Participatory Action Research and the basic assumption of the critical social science on the combination of theory and praxis with the main objective to empower "grass root" communities. Both approaches emphasize the importance of a participatory social change i.e. : change from within and by the grass root communities themselves. Social change can be achieved through the process of empowerment which includes raising consciousness, collaboration and dialoques, increasing self-esteem and community solidarity.
