Isi artikelThere is a mutually beneficial relationship between democracy as a social system and education as an inevitable process in shepherding human beings to be human. As a social system which gives primacy to human rights, democracy, to quote Dewey, will stand firm only through indispensable support from a learned society, This is to say that education should be a social conveyance which consistenly encourages pupils to be fully aware of the values of democracy for human life. Such an education requires an open and fair interaction between master and pupils as equal persons and an atmosphere within which sharing of ideas could naturally and vividly take place. This requirement is fundamental as educational basically encultivates understanding, not transfering knowledge. To put it in Dewey's word, a democratic climate is the sine qua non condition for education. The fundamental aim of education is not mastering knowledge as information, but intentionally prompting and building up intelligent capacity that enables pupils to live their life independently and face their future courageously.
