Isi artikelJohn Stuart Mill's book on Liberty has been interpreted in two levels of understanding, the concept of liberalism and the concept of utilitarianism. The idea reflected in the present paper is in line with the second. Mill's notion of liberty is not defended for the sake of human freedom but for the sake of society. He has no concern to defend free will, but liberty as a principle which makes each individual in the society pursue one's own good and the good of the society. Individuality should grow for the sake of society. On Liberty thus is a manifesto of individuality agains despotism of all kinds : political rulers or majority opinion. In a very convincing way Mill contended "If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing the one. And if all people and the individual are in conflict, they should talk. Talking is the only way to achieve truth.
