Isi artikelThis article discusses linguistic forms and pragmatic functions of opening moves that occurred in informal Chinese telephone conversations between female participants. The study suggests that existing semantic categories of phatic talk based on English are inadequate in light of the Chinese data featuring both address and relation-oriented themes. Phatic expressions in Chinese telephone conversation openings take on a variety of forms; they may define relations, structure as well as ratify marked sequences of telephone conversation openings, and convey the purpose of calling in keep-intouch calls. Indexing multiple contextual factors, such language use serves important discoursal and interpersonal functions. Other situation specific opening moves are also discussed.
