The use of directional and spatial morphemes as metaphors for more abstract semantic domains has been widely studied as part of the phenomenon of grammaticalisation. Perception and cognition constitute one such domain, in which the sensory process is represented by the image schema of a path or trajectory. The directional particles of Polynesian languages, in particular mai ‘towards speaker’ and atu ‘away from speaker’, figure prominently in expressions of this sort. It can be demonstrated that an important function of these particles as they combine with verbs of perception is the indication of differences in point of view or discourse salience. A choice of possible perspectives on a situation is made possible by the interaction of the basic deictic force of mai or atu with two other factors: verbs of perception with different argument structure; and two distinct conceptualisations of the sensory path itself, according to whether the Experiencer or the Percept is seen as the source of the metaphorical trajectory.
