This paper studies linguistic expressions of non-straightforwardness – approximators such as sort of, dummies such as whatshisname, as well as exactnessmarkers such as true – and proposes an analysis within the framework of Functional Discourse Grammar. It is demonstrated that the presence of an Interpersonal Level within this model as well as the various layers that make up this level provide the means to give a systematic account of the distribution and behaviour of these elements in a wide variety of languages.
