Corpus evidenceispresentedwhichsuggeststhatfromafirst-orderperspective ‘appropriateness’ and ‘inappropriateness’ are more salient notionsthan ‘politeness’ and ‘impoliteness’ or ‘rudeness’. Itisthenarguedthatnormsofappropriateverbalbehaviourina communitycanbeestablishedempiricallybyemployingexperimentalmethods.Productionquestionnairedatamaynotreflectwhat participantswouldactuallysayinreallife,butrevealwhatguidestheirexpectations,perceptionandperformanceinagivensocial situation.ItisshownthatsmalltalkbetweenstrangersatapartyisgovernedbydivergingnormsindifferentnationalvarietiesofEnglish, viz. AmericanEnglish,IrishEnglishandEnglishEnglish.Itisfurthershownthatgenderandagedifferencesexistwithinanationalvariety and thatnormsofappropriateverbalbehaviourseemtobesubjecttoage-grading.
