A smallcorpusofstudente-mailrequeststoacademicstaffinaBritishandanAustralianuniversitywascollectedinorderto investigate thecross-culturalnatureofEnglishesintheserequestingevents.Thenotionsof ACCOUNT and BUT-JUSTIFICATION, togetherwith the conceptsof EQUITY and EQUILIBRIUM are usedtoexplicatethedistributionofvariousfeaturesassociatedwiththeserequests.Results indicate thattheBritishdataorienttodeferential DEPENDENCE whereas theAustraliandataexhibitinterdependent EGALITARIANISM.
